In 2016 Daniel began attending the Sobesky Academy, which is a K-12 special education school located in Lakewood, Colorado. These schools provide specialized instruction and support for students with a range of disabilities and learning challenges, from kindergarten through 12th grade. Daniel Larson attended Sobesky Academy during his high school years and graduated in 2017.
According to a Reddit AMA conducted by a former schoolmate of Daniel’s, user u/FlyingFoxandwings, Sobesky Academy had a small student body, and students were generally respectful and understanding of each other’s issues. Contrary to some rumors, Daniel was not bullied at school because most students had similar challenges and were empathetic towards each other.
School Years and Challenges
Little is known about Daniel’s school years beyond his attendance at the Tennyson Center for middle school and Sobesky Academy for high school. Despite his claims of being enrolled at CU Boulder, Daniel never attended college. He often talks about considering various majors, but given his homelessness and financial irresponsibility, it is unlikely that he will attend college in the future.
From the AMA, it was revealed that many students had similarly severe mental issues like Daniel. The school aimed to rehabilitate students and help them achieve academic success, but Daniel’s severe mental health issues made this challenging.
Behavior and Perceptions at Sobesky Academy
During the AMA, u/FlyingFoxandwings dispelled rumors of Daniel being violent at school. While he did have some incidents of self-harm, he was generally reserved and did not cause much trouble. However, he did occasionally trigger “close and lock” situations, where the school would go into lockdown due to unruly behavior. She also mentioned that Daniel had poor hygiene and some unusual habits, such as picking his nose with his tongue, which he still does today. Despite these habits, Daniel seemed relatively normal compared to his current behavior.
