Death of Daniel Larson’s Grandmother Nancy

On July 24, 2019, Daniel Larson’s grandmother, Nancy Kiswiney Shimer, passed away from cancer, aged 72. Nancy had been a significant figure in Daniel’s life, providing care and support. Her death was a devastating loss for Daniel, further destabilizing his already challenging circumstances. Nancy’s passing marked the end Daniel’s, for him, crucial support system, leading to increased difficulties in managing his life and mental health (beginning his downward spiral).

Prior to her death, she arranged for Daniel to be placed in a state-run group home program for the disabled. This program also provided him with a job at a thrift store in the summer of 2019, where he reportedly had $500 stolen from him through a gift card scam.

Nancy Shimer: A Brief Biography

Nancy Shimer (née Kiswiney, April 2, 1947 – July 24, 2019) was Daniel Larson’s adoptive maternal grandmother and later legal guardian.

Born in Michigan to Saleen Kiswiney and Rameses Kallie (Kiswiney), Nancy married Daniel William Shimer (1943–2015) on November 28, 1970. The couple had two biological daughters, Sarah and Rachel, and one adoptive daughter, Elizabeth Shimer, who is Daniel Larson’s mother. Daniel and Nancy divorced on September 1, 2005.

According to a video from the Tennyson Center, Nancy moved from California to Colorado to be with Daniel during his stay at the Center and to assume guardianship of him, preventing his placement into foster care. Daniel lived with his grandmother outside the center for an unspecified period during his youth.

Nancy Shimer passed away from cancer in Oakland, California, on July 24, 2019, at the age of 72.
